As the name says, Carry forward functionality allows the user to use the responses of a previous Question as the options of a succeeding Question. There can be multiple Carry Forward conditions that the user may use for their survey.
The carry forward condition differs by Question types. It is different for Categorical questions (Single choice/Multi-choice) and Grid Questions(Simple grid/Complex grid).


Carry Forward from Single Choice and Multiple Choice Questions
Follow the steps to apply Carry Forward logic on your question:-

  • Create the question on which you wish to apply the carry forward logic. It can only be a Single-choice, Multi-choice or any grid question.
  • Now click on the "Carry Forward options" check-box present in the right pane of the Design page.

  • Fields related to Carry Forward will appear.
  • Select a question from which you wist to Carry forward you options in the "Carry Forward Items from" Drop-down.
  • Select the appropriate Carry Forward Condition from the "Carry Forward based on" field. 

If you are carry forwarding options from Single-choice or Multi-choice questions, the conditions displayed are as below:-


    1. Selected Items : This will only show the "Selected items" from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
    2. Items Not Selected: This will only show the "Not Selected items" from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
    3. Items Displayed: This will show "all the items" for which Display is ON, from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
    4. Items Not Displayed: This will show only those items for which Display is OFF, from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
    5. All items - Displayed & Hidden: This will show the list of all the items from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
  • After applying the required condition, Click on Done. The logic will get applied and will be reflected on the Design page as below:-

  • The logic will be applied and it can be verified from the Survey Preview.



Carry Forward from Grid Type Questions


Follow the below mentioned steps to apply Carry Forward logic on your question:-

  • Create the question on which you wish to apply the carry forward logic. It can only be a Single-choice, Multi-choice or any grid question.
  • Now click on the "Carry Forward options" check-box present in the right pane of the Design page.

  • Fields related to Carry Forward will appear.
  • Select a question from which you wish to Carry forward your options in the "Carry Forward Items from" Drop-down.
  • Select the appropriate Carry Forward Condition from the "Carry Forward based on" field. 


If you are carry forwarding options from a Grid Type question, the conditions displayed are as below:-

  1. Selected Items : This will only show the "Selected items" from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
  2. Items Not Selected: This will only show the "Not Selected items" from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
  3. Items Displayed: This will show "all the items" for which Display is ON, from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
  4. Items Not Displayed: This will show only those items for which Display is OFF, from the question selected in "Carry Forward Items from" drop-down.
  5. Selected Items in particular Attributes: You will have separate condition for all the Attributes given in the grid. You can select the condition to choose to carry forward only the selected items for which the attribute has been answered. 
  • After applying the required condition, Click on Done. 

  • The logic will get applied and will be reflected on the Design page as below:-

  • The logic will can also be verified from the Survey Preview.
